An invitation to join The Eltham Society

Do you care about Eltham? Why not become a member?

The Eltham Society, which was founded in 1965, is concerned about all of these things.

The Eltham Society keeps a watching brief on the physical environment of Eltham and considers ways in which it might be improved. Planning applications are scrutinised, with objectives comments made to the Planning Department of London Borough of Greenwich.

Lectures and talks to other organisations are given to stimulate interest in Eltham's history and amenities.

Research is undertaken into Eltham's history and development for presentation in publications or at exhibitions; local citizens are encouraged to contribute their reminiscences.

The Eltham Society Award is presented annually for schemes deemed to enhance local architecture, amenities or the environment; trees are planted locally from time to time.

Since its foundation the Eltham Society has:

    • Built up archives of material on Eltham, including written records, photographs and artefacts.
    • Publish books and other material on Eltham's history, amenities, buildings and prominent citizens.
    • Helped fight campaigns against the East London River Crossing and other developments.
    • Undertaken special activities in Eltham including archaeology, tree planting and the erection of the Eltham Town Sign.

    Membership includes:

    • A quarterly Newsletter giving details of forthcoming Society activities; it also includes information about recent changes in Eltham and articles of special interest.
    • A programme of lectures by speakers on a wide range of topics
    • Regular visits to places of interest and local walks.

Additional members of the same household can join at a reduced rate but will not receive a separate newsletter.

Subscriptions are due each January. Cheques should be made payable to "The Eltham Society". If you are a taxpayer you might like to complete the gift aid form.
